Remind me not to get into one. I wouldn't like it.
There does appear to be an aspect of test here though. You stop talking, you stop getting insulted. Maybe people enjoy that? I wouldn't.
I guess there's an urge to avoid letting someone else get their way just because they can be more unpleasant than you, but in the case of an argument, I often just end up nodding and smiling, as I don't see any further point in trying to get a point across, when it failed long ago.
